Introducing a Yearly Progress Test for CT1-3

Due to the low pass rates and in a bid to improve the NW success rate in the CASC, we are about to introduce a yearly progress test for all CT1-3's (basically CASC revision). We hope to trial this in May 2012, but we will need your help and co-operation.. We are currently in the process of training all of our examiners to CASC standard to help with reliability and standardisation of marking. We will be in touch with more information shortly (and exam slots). However, I'd love to know your initial thoughts, so please do give myself (Sam) or Dr Longson a call 0161 720 2905. Please remember this is for your benefit, not ours (its a huge amount of work) and its completely free! Younger consultants may remember the benefits of our old Mock OSCE - ask your trainers...

CASC PASS - YOU DID IT!!!

Dr A Abbas, Dr H Cappleman, Dr S Farrell, Dr G Gadekar, Dr A Joiner, Dr M Kurkar, Dr N Ranceva, Dr R Sanderson, Dr J Shankland and Dr N Singh.

Very well done to you all. We wish you every success in the forthcoming ST4 interviews - don't hesistate to give us a call if you need any advice/assistance!.

If your name isn't on here, please don't worry, you will do just fine next time. Its just going to take a little longer! Dr N Perera & Dr J Scaria passed today too - both are currently off scheme and we look forward to welcoming them back into ST4 in August. 2012, fingers crossed!

Medical Education has Moved

We have now moved into our new premises. We are still on the same site, (North Manchester General) but we are on the road opposite to A&E, leading to Park House. We are the last building on the right (just before you turn the corner to Park House. All of our numbers and emails remain the same. Feel free to pop in and see our new facilities. Our new Seminar Room can seat around 100+ and is bookable for training events from March 12 (still awaiting the arrival of audio visual items). We can facilitate simple meetings of any size immediately. Feel free to come and have a look, have a coffee and chat...

kkk Safety in Psychiatry
Trainee Reps informed the School Board that some of you are unaware of the Incident reporting process. All violent incidents or near miss incidents should be recorded. The trainee MUST complete the Trainee Version. If the trainee is absent from work due to a violent incident then the Educational Supervisor MUST complete the form on behalf of the trainee (Trainer Version). For more information on Safety go to the Governance Pages..

GMC set to Approve Trainers. We are well on the way to meeting most of these standards, but there will be some changes ahead no doubt! Please do remember to notify us of any changes to which may affect the trainee job descriptions, notify us when an ES changes and ensure that you continue to update the mandatory training via Train the Trainer days, WPBAs, Completing the Educational Supervisors reports (coming soon), and other school events.

There is new guidance on how to make OOP research time count for your CCT

Evidencing Competencies
Competencies can be evidenced in many ways and NOT just by WPBA's, though very important they cannot on their own fully demonstrate competence. Competencies need to be triangulated over a period time and with a wide range of assessors.
A single competency can be evidenced using a WPBA, a letter from a patient, record of a discussion in supervision, record of something experienced whilst on call or a piece of reflective practice. Talk to other colleagues and find out how they are evidencing their competencies, you'll be suprised at the many ways you all do this or just give us a call. Don't forget to upload your madatory training certificates too - these include CPR, Breakaway, Induction local and trust wide, evidence of completing the GMCsurvey and sickness records. All these are absolutely required at the ARCP
